NEW DISCUSSION BOARD

So many of the old traditional P&M shops have closed over the decades. Many of the early ones have no records that they even existed and many that have closed since the 30's are unknown to the younger generations and are in danger of being forgotten all together. But there are still people out there who remember the likes of Mudies, Harris', Hazzard's, Earnie's, Mrs, Jones', Olley's and countless others that have fallen by the wayside. These are part of our heritage and if we don't collect the memories of those who do remember them then they will disappear from our collective history completely!

As you probably know, the "Pie and Mash Forum" never worked properly (understatement of the year!). I have now replaced it with a much simpler Discussion Board where you can ask and answer questions about all manner of P&M related subjects. But especially those old lost shops. What were they called? Where were they? Who ran them? What were they like?

Once again, a big, big THANK YOU to all our raters and reviewers. As of today there are 458 shop reviews and a total of 776 shop ratings. Your opinions are vital and very much appreciated; not only by me but also the public, judging by some of the emails I'm getting, so please keep them coming - especially with 19 shops without any sort of rating at all yet!

SHOP OWNERS

PLEASE make sure you check your page for accuracy and email me any errors or missing information at editor@pie-and-mash.com. In addition, if you have a Facebook page but the logo on your shop page has a red X across the Facebook logo please email your Facebook link to editor@pie-and-mash.com for inclusion in the database.

Kind regards,
Mal

A new pie and mash stall, Jono’s, opened on Saturday in Nag’s Head Market, Holloway.

The stand served more than 300 portions of the traditional East End fare on its first day.

Danielle Barfoot, who has set up the stall with two friends, said: “It’s something we have been thinking about doing for a while. We have had so much positive feedback already, from people who are saying it’s something they have always been calling out for in the area.”

Supplier Jim Thurston said: “Whenever there’s a market, pie and mash does well. It’s the first one I’ve heard of that does home deliveries and I think they could be on to a winner.”

You can find details of the business here.

MANZE'S ARE NOT CLOSING
18 March 2010

There has been a rumour circulating around various London forums in recent weeks that Manze's in Tower Bridge Road is going to close for good. The following is a statement from Geoff Manze:

"There is no truth in this rumour at all, I believe it all started a couple of years ago when the Council increased rents by a significant amount to shop keepers. Apparently a spokesman for our company said we couldn't afford the new rents, which is in itself is quite amusing as we have held the freehold since 1902! So rest assured we will be continuing to serve pie & mash to the community for many years to come."

TROPICAL PIE & MASH

If you're heading for Tenerife and think you'll miss your Pie and Mash then think again. Soul City on the main road in San Eugenio/Torviscas (opposite Laguna Park 1 and outside the gates of Ocean Park) is run by Billy and Lorraine and has a special Pie and Mash day every Saturday. I am told, however, that you have to book your meal by phone ahead of time. I don't have any more details yet, but at least you have a starting point in your hunt.

BRILL NEWS!

The Brill Restaurant is now serving Pie and Mash which, while not cooked on the premises, comes from www.eelhouse.co.uk. If you've read my review of this fare then you'll know that it's pukkah grub. The Brill is just a stone's throw from King's Cross Station. Now, who's going to be the first one to write us a review?

THAMES EEL NUMBERS CRASH

Those who like their eels must be in a state of shock with the news that eel populations in the River Thames have crashed by a massive 98 per cent in just four years. The eels appear to be vanishing from the capital’s river, according to researchers from the Zoological Society of London.

Every year, the ZSL’s Tidal Thames Conservation Project places eel traps in a number of the river’s tributaries to catch the fish and allow scientists to record numbers before setting them free. While 1,500 were captured in the traps in 2005, just 50 were recorded last year! Read more...

In another report boxer and World title contender Kevin Mitchell has given up his favourite dish of jellied eels because of the news. Read more...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GODDARDS

PIE & MASH KIOSK
ON EBAY!

Wow! Now here's something you don't see every day of the week. There's a purpose built pie and mash kiosk up for auction on Ebay. The kiosk is only four years old and has been at London Bridge Station, although it's currently in Maidstone. Bidding price is just £18,000 with an end time of 7th February at 11.25 am. Take a look at the full details -  here's the link.

ANOTHER TWO PIE & MASH
SHOPS UP FOR SALE

Well, I seem to be stumbling across these more and more often. The first (above) seems to be Danny's Pie & Mash in Ilford up for sale for £130,000 with a £30k ground rent. (click on the image for a larger view of the page). I don't know much about Danny's. Perhaps you, dear reader, could update me. Email me or write a short (or long) review on Danny's Shop Page.

The second shop I do not recognise. Purported to be in East Sussex and up for grabs at £175,000. Anyone know which shop this is?

MALDON PIE 'N' EEL SHOP
UP FOR SALE?

While scouring the internet for Pie and Mash news I came across the above page (click on the image for a larger view of the page).

On the face of it, it looks like the leasehold on  Maldon Pie 'n' Eel House is up for sale for £57,500. I only hope that it's bought by a Pie & Mash enthusiast and doesn't fall to a burger bar or similar! If you happen to be interested then the ad can be found HERE.

OLYMPIC FEAST?

Moves have been afoot to persuade the London Olympics Committee to put pie and mash on the menu in 2012.

Newham Council want locally produced pie and mash, jellied eels and fish and chips to be sold in the Olympic Park at Stratford as well as Asian and African food that is well-established in the area.

Previous Olympics have seen independent food and drink sellers banned by the International Olympic Committee to protect sponsors' rights.

The London Organising Committee for 2012 has just unveiled its food strategy, but it is expected that world-wide sponsors (Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Cadbury etc!) will be protected and rule the roost.

Their 42 page Food Vision was released on 7th December.

If you want a chance of being involved then I'd suggest the best starting off point is the London 2012 Business Network pages, where any companies interested can register their details.

P.S. That awful logo is never going to grow on me!
